Is Perfectionism Holding You Back? Why Selective PR is Killing Your Momentum

“High-impact profiles are built on the compound interest of being consistently present.”

The Myth of the ‘Top-Tier Only’ Strategy

In the pursuit of a higher profile, it is easy to fall into the trap of over-selectivity. We often see experts holding out for the Sunday broadsheets or the elusive TED invitation, while inadvertently dismissing a wealth of diverse opportunities that come their way.

This hesitation usually stems from externally perceived criteria – the idea that a podcast doesn’t have ‘enough’ subscribers or that a journalist doesn’t have very many followers on social media. There is a lingering fear among some that appearing in a niche publication or a boutique space might somehow diminish an established reputation.

In reality, the opposite is true. True influence is built by weaving a beautiful web of connections – finding the spaces where you can genuinely broaden your network, talk to new audiences, and make friends with peers in your sector.

Visibility (and its Velocity)

We find that leaders who make the most significant progress are those who remain open-minded and receptive. By treating every placement as a strategic touchpoint rather than over-worrying about metrics, a level of momentum is built that a ‘holding out for the best’ strategy can’t match.

PR isn’t about the glamour of the placement (although, of course, some are very glamorous!); it’s about the digital building blocks of your expertise. In this modern landscape, every contribution serves a multitude of purposes:

Search

Every guest post and interview creates a digital footprint. When a potential partner or client searches your name, they will find your website alongside lots of lovely external validation of your expertise.

Vibes

Niche podcasts and smaller publications often have a more engaged, dedicated audience. These are the spaces where trust is built quickly because the conversations are more intimate and specific.

Polish

Public speaking and media interviewing are skills. Using smaller, more ‘friendly’ stages to refine your story ensures that when you enter the bigger rooms, you’re ready to own them!

Finding the Sweet Spot

It goes without saying that alignment is a non-negotiable. We would never advocate for a placement that contradicts your core values or sits in a space that lacks integrity. However, there is a vast middle ground between low-quality noise and the Front Page.

We encourage our clients to look for the ripple effect. One small podcast appearance can be transcribed into three informative LinkedIn articles, shared with your mailing list as a deep dive, and spotted by a journalist looking for a fresh perspective on that exact topic.

Our Two Cents

Visibility is a bit like a muscle, and it’s got to get in training! If you start before you’ve warmed up, you’re likely to find the weight too heavy. Start contributing. Put your voice forward. Be a little flexible with what you accept so you can hone your messaging.

Authority isn’t found in a single perfect stage; it is woven through a series of intentional, diverse connections that form a global reputation.
